Merle Haggard's grandmother, Hattie "Granny" Harp, played a significant role in his life. She was a fiddle player and introduced him to music at a young age. Haggard often cited her as his biggest musical influence and credited her with teaching him how to play the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin.
Granny Harp was also a major influence on Haggard's songwriting. Many of his songs, such as "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried," were based on her stories and experiences. She even served as the inspiration for his band, The Strangers, whose name came from her telling him, "Don't be a stranger."
Haggard often spoke fondly of his grandmother and the impact she had on his life. In his autobiography, he wrote, "My grandmother was the one constant in my life, the one person who always cared about me and believed in me. She gave me my love of music and taught me everything I know."
